Situated near the village of Cully­backey, just a stone’s throw from Ballymena, Co Antrim, Maurice Knowles farms alongside his son, Daniel. For generations, dairy has been the main farm enterprise. The duo currently milk 120 cows in a full indoor system, calving the majority of cows in the spring and autumn months. Having made the decision to become involved in the family business full-time, Daniel decided to venture into the poultry sector. In 2020, two free-range layer units were built. Between the two enterprises, there is always a considerable reliance on a telehandler. Just over 10 years ago, the family transi­tioned to the Merlo brand. TI1ey are now on their third and fourth machines: a TF42.7 model, which was purchased in 2021, and a compact P27.6 model, which arrived in March 2023.

David Lennox, a sheep farmer from Cookstown, Northern Ireland simply wouldn’t be without his Kubota X1110 RTV. Looking after his 400 purebred breeding ewes on his 190-acre farm is a busy day-to-day operation. Working largely on his own, David tackles the steep hillsides and undulating terrain in his Kubota X1110 that was purchased 2 years ago from DA Forgie.

“We purchased our first Kubota RTV six years ago and haven’t looked back. It’s a must around the farm. I have a quad bike in addition to the RTV, but this is my main vehicle for getting around and carrying out farm work.” David comments.

“The hydrostatic transmission is fantastic; I tried the other models, but they were belt-driven transmissions and we encountered issues with belt slip and a jittery ride in general. We much preferred the Kubota mainly for this reason it provides smooth driving, grip on hills and effective engine braking for downhill operations. This allowed us to have total control of the vehicle when travelling down steep hillsides, which on our farm, is a huge benefit.” David explains.

The X1110 utility vehicle is very well suited for a hill farm just like Davids, not only is it comfortable, but it’s also multifunctional. David can easily transport feed, tools, fencing materials, and more with its hydraulic cargo tipping bed and tow hitch. “The RTV has saved me countless hours running back and forth to the farm,” he explains.

The Kubota X1110 features a 24.2 HP Kubota 3-cylinder liquid-cooled ETVCS diesel engine, powerful but still economical. “We have found the vehicle to be very efficient, it is registered for the road, and we travel back and forth to our other farm with it. Despite it being used every day, it does not require a lot of fuel. The RTV is definitely my first choice over the jeep when I need to pop somewhere down the road.”
